About vintagevandalizm

My name is Jasmin Rodriguez also known as Vintage Vandalizm. I am an avid collector of vintage dresses and most people know me for my style. I am also an artist and I try to incorporate all aspects of art in everything that I do. I am an aspiring Designer and I plan to take over the fashion world with my limitless imagination. My whole philosophy on fashion has always been to think outside of the box. My style has no boundaries but I have commonly taken inspiration from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I love the pinup culture and style however I love being versatile so most of the time I like to clash opposites, different genres of history and fashion and somehow, someway, I make it work. I think the world is too fixated on trends that people tend to forget who they are and what they like..I’m here to help you break free, to help you stand out, to help you create your own style, be your own person, and most importantly see fashion in a whole different light.

Vintage finds: The Williamsburg Flea!

IMG_8914It was a beautiful day in Brooklyn and I finally had a sunday off to do whatever I wanted so I dragged my boyfriend out of bed to finally visit the Williamsburg flea. I have heard many great things about the Brooklyn Flea’s and cannot believe I haven’t been to one till now. Better late than never because It was absolutely perfect and such a great way to recharge my soul because NY really doesn’t have the best vintage shops. In my opinion most vintage shops here are way too expensive and don’t really carry the great styles I see elsewhere. I can’t blame them, the rent here is so expensive, they have no choice but to price their vintage at higher price points. Anyway, If you can imagine, I was in pure heaven at the WillyB Flea, the prices were just right and the vintage and antiques were great. I met some great vintage dealers and purchased some really cool things. I am already itching to go back! I get lots of messages from many of you asking about my favorite vintage stores in NYC, my response from now on will be “Just go to the Brooklyn Flea’s”. Now I just have to check out the Fort Greene and Long Island flea to see what great vintage I will find. I plan to make trips to the flea markets at least once or twice a month because my soul loves it and needs it! Check out all of the interesting things I saw and purchased at the WillyB flea inside! Wild Soul Sunglasses!

IMG_8998As you guys already know, I have a bad addiction to eyewear. Now I usually go for the cat eye look, vintage or non-vintage, but once I realized I can sport other shapes and make them look retro I’ve been venturing out ever since. Whilst looking for something a little different from my collection I came across Wild Soul Sunglasses, a brand that creates quality, edgy, and retro sunglasses that makes a greater statement than fashion. They are humanitarians whose proceeds support charities/a cause of your choice whether it be health, societal, or environmental. Of course I had to jump at the chance to snag myself a pair of sunglasses so I supported the forests and chose the “Owl” style in the sand color and they are absolutely stunning. They came with a tribal knit case and cool necklace. I have never discovered a brand whose main purpose is to create wonderful eyewear but also help those in need. They acknowledge the struggle of people who are living with HIV, cancer, or mental illness’. They acknowledge those who are in need of shelter, education, and food. They acknowledge the earth and the never-ending struggle to save animals and forests..and for that I respect this brand wholeheartedly. If you want to get yourself a cool pair of sunglasses you will feel great about purchasing, you must check out Wild Soul.

IMG_8902Love the case these bad girls came in and the cute necklace too. IMG_8979Love the color, I have nothing like it in my collection. The quality is amazing too.IMG_8973

Support a cause. Make a bigger statement than fashion with Wild Soul.

Let’s face it pinups, not all of us are a size 2-10 but those days of it being difficult or nearly impossible to find amazing plus sized clothing are now over thanks to a few amazing brands that are changing the game as we know it!

My inspiration for this post?–All of you gorgeous curvaceous pinup girls out there who don’t know where to even look when it comes to fabulous retro plus sized clothes.

photoshootsMy resource for all things plus sized and perfect? Tess Munster, a BEAUTIFUL & FABULOUS plus sized model who inspires women all over the world to love themselves whatever their size. Let me tell you a little more about this fierce and fabulous lady…Tess has been turned down from modeling gigs, bashed, teased, bullied, and shunned by the most vicious and ruthless kind of people in the world because of her size but continues to turn her troubles into triumphs by living out her dreams as a famous plus sized model and makeup artist in the heart of LA. She is the go-to-model for plus sized brands all over the world, has been featured in countless magazines, and was the face of the TV show called “Heavy” on A&E.  Her fearlessness and achievements continue to challenge society’s standards of women who are over a size 10. She is proof and the perfect example that women of any size, any color, any race, can be someone if they learn to love what makes them different because we are all special in our own very unique way.

I had to include her in this post to inspire many of you who aspire to be as great as Tess. She inspires me and I am a size 2! Thanks to her I discovered all of these amazing plus sized retro brands that offer you the same sexy, sassy, classy, and fun clothes brands offer to the size 2′s and 4′s. Slap Back Brooklyn!

IMG_8304IMG_8305Sometimes I like to just wander off on my own in different boroughs to discover awesome shops and great places to eat. On this day I decided to explore more of Williamsburg and all of the new shops and cafes that have been opening in that area. I normally stay in the Bedford part of Williamsburg to enjoy the cluster of shops there but decided to walk there from Lorimer when I discovered an AMAZING and adorable rockabilly shop called Slap Back! My friend Rachel spoke to me about it two days earlier but I never got the address so it’s so crazy that I naturally stumbled upon this new gem of Brooklyn by accident! I swear it was meant to be and it was totally love at first sight as I never saw so many dresses I wanted all at once! The owner Renee was hella sweet, hella knowledgable on the best rockabilly brands and the lifestyle, and we connected right away! She was wearing a Beach Bash sun top and the most amazing high-waisted red pants-such a babe! She definitely knows her stuff because her selection of dresses and separates were all unique and even reasonably priced! Many of the designers she carries I had never even heard of until now! She even carries Kenley Collins clothing line that is very reminiscent of the Pink Ladies in the movie Grease. Kenley’s collection included pink gingham dresses with matching bolero’s and bandanas, other 50s/60s style dresses in fun prints, rose adorned playsuits and separates, super cute cigarette pants, and cropped t-shirts that’ll make you swoon! Coincidentally Kenley stopped by the shop while I was trying on dresses and I was introduced to this rad and talented lady thanks to Renee. I then later found out that she was on project runway! I didn’t even recognize her because her hair is now pink (so cute!). Her and Renee share so much girl power, had such great energy, and I really enjoyed talking to them while I admired the clothes at the shop. I fell in love with all of the dresses and separates I tried on and ended up leaving with not one but two dresses! One was a Kenley Collins cow print dress and the other was  a Vanity Project cowgirl print dress. I couldn’t leave the shop without them! What a great way to start of my day wandering around Brooklyn! If you haven’t been to Slap Back shop, check out the tour of photos I have taken of the shop along with the dresses and separates I tried on inside! Continue reading

Beach Bash Bikini’s on Bowery!

IMG_5322The other day, I headed to soho in nautical fashion with my mom to go swimsuit shopping at one of my favorite stores Bettie Page Clothing. I was looking for something retro and what better place to find it than at the Bettie Page store? I just found out that they just got in a fresh batch of Beach Bash swimsuits so I went crazy trying all of them on until I found the right one lol. Beach Bash is another brand owned by Bettie Page that specializes in beach wear and they have some REALLLY cute stuff!  It was so hard to choose because they had so many great styles with different prints and they all looked so darn cute! I actually bought a Beach Bash swimsuit last year and have worn it to death because it’s so cute and comfortable. However, just like a woman can never have too many shoes, a woman can also never have too many swimsuits! Beach Bash offers a variety of cute beach wear that doesn’t only consist of swimsuits but playsuits as well! I love that they are also reasonably priced. I am obsessed with their leopard/colored playsuits that you can mix and match. They are just so awesome for this crazy hot weather and you can always find them along with everything else that’s retro and fabulous at the Bettie Page store. I just knew going in there would be trouble but just haddd to. I wish I could have left in the swimsuit I purchased because it was so hot that day but my cute stripe romper did me some justice. I was feeling very nautical that day adorned with stripes, my vintage boat steer necklace, boater moccasins, sunglasses, and Long Champ tote. You would have thought I was sailing out to sea! See more photos of my day and outfit inside! Continue reading

INDIE 184 FANTASY Exhibit

IMG_5250

The amazing and talented graffiti artist/designer Indie 184 just recently had a solo exhibit called “Fantasy” at the TT-Underground gallery. As you all already know, I have been friends with Indie for a few years now (I have also modeled for her clothing line Kweenz Destroy) so I was stoked to see her and show my support. I almost didn’t make it because I was working late but thanks to my friend Lacuna, I made it just in time to see the exhibit. I would have felt terrible If I missed it, I have been anticipating this show since I saw the flyer! When I arrived I was blown away and so happy I made it. Indie has created a plethora of beautiful collaged art work inspired by her emotions, thoughts, and the powerful and glamorous golden girls of the 20th century. Many of the golden girls include a few of my favorites like Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget. Hedy Lamarr, Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth, and even Katy Keene! As a powerful influence of our era and a golden girl herself, it makes sense that Indie would incorporate these women into her work. They all share something in common, they are all FIERCE! Indie used many mediums to create these paintings such as spraypaint, acrylic, enamel, plaster, glitter, stencil and paper on canvas proving that she is artisically versatile. This show was totally up my ally and I definitely enjoyed every second of it. If you didn’t make it to Indie’s solo show “Fantasy” at the TT-underground gallery, don’t fret, I’ve taken photos of her pieces here!

So of course I went looking for some cool cat eye sunglasses when I stumbled across some cool Vera Wang tortuous shell sunnies on Glasses.com. Now tell me, what do you think about my polyvore look inspired by the Vera Wang Sarda sunnies?Weekend Getaway!
Here is a rundown of everything in this collage and where you can find these pieces!

Technicolor dreams..

n7It was a beautiful and sunny day in Brooklyn and I was feeling very 60′s with this hairdo despite my 1950′s ensemble. I would have worn a mod 60′s dress to go with my hair but have been dying to wear this new dress I snagged via D&J Vintage so I just went with that. My golden rule of getting dressed is that your hair must always match your outfit and even though my hair and dress are from different eras, this worked out quite nicely. I love to mix, match, and blend eras and culture into my outfits; anything that inspires me really. There is a funny story about this dress. Janell and Danny of D&J Vintage had me model some of their stuff for their Etsy shop and this happened to me one of the pieces. As soon as I put this dress on, I begged them not to sell it lololol! I nearly died when I coveted it and it is one of my most treasured vintage pieces. Many of the pieces I have gotten from D&J Vintage are some of my best! Of course I had to pull this off with some cuban heel stockings from Agent Provocateur and my new vintage shoes, gloves, and cat eye glasses. I was feeling extra vintage and loved every single minute of it. I live and breathe this stuff so being able to walk around in my vintage threads makes me feel good and happy. It was a really good day spent with my beau who is responsible for these outfit photos. Lets travel back in time with some of my detailed photos below! <3
n4Many Vintage dresses are made with delicate fabrics that tear or age badly. This dress is made out of cotton and has no defects what so ever for its age! I love the neckline and the pockets on the hips.n1The dress matches my new vintage deco cat eye glasses perfectly. I won them on ebay a few weeks ago. It also works well with my vintage earrings that I also found at D&J Vintage! My ring is from Billy’s Antiques when it was open a few years ago.
62dcdf50bfd311e2998822000a1fbc5d_7Details of my new baby<3n6 I wear my Bishette purse all the time! One more time doesn’t hurt ;) n2I found these vintage shoes (1950s) on Etsy. They always have a few lucky deals on vintage springolators!n3Last but not least! My Cuban Heel stocking by Agent Provocateur. They are the only stockings that match my skin tone other than my favorite brand Secrets in Lace!

Head on over to D&J Vintage for the best vintage threads!
